Karen Bystedt rocked the contemporary art world with the USA introduction of The Lost Warhols, at Photo LA, 2013. The body of work was quickly selected to headline the Month of Photography in Los Angeles Show, at The Robert Berman Gallery in Bergamot Station. After studying photography and literature at the American College in Paris, the young artist returned to the United States and earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Film, at New York University, in 1982. It was while she was a student in New York, that she photographed Warhol at The Factory. Bystedt’s work is in the permanent collection of the Andy Warhol Museum, the Museum of Modern Art of Armenia, The Hearst Foundation, The Lourdes Foundation, Prince Albert of Monaco’s private collection, and in the collections of Tomasso Buti, George Lopez, David Caruso and The Dean Collection (Swizz Beatz). Between 1987 - 1993, Bystedt capture Hollywood A-listers such as Brad Pitt, Courtney Cox, Sandra Bullock, Johnny Depp, Christian Slater, Laurence Fishburn, Melanie Griffith and many more. She later published her book “BEFORE THEY WERE FAMOUS” including these legends. In June, 2016, Bystedt introduced her own mixed media art, “The King Kollection” series including Andy & Basquiat art which she adorned w/ Gold leaf/ diamond dust, acrylic and stencils - original photographs by Bystedt and Brad Branson- currently at the Ron Robinson store at Fred Segal Melrose in Hollywood. In addition, Bystedt conceptualized “The Gold Queen” collection using her own image as the art, her own body as a canvas painted in Gold and dripping Gold Paint. One of the Gold Queens from this series as well as another self-portrait will be on display as part of a group show at the Untitled Space in NYC. The artist-photographer currently resides and creates in her loft in DTLA.
